Detached House
Approached by an impressive tree lined driveway and enjoying grounds of approximately 26 acres, Alton Manor is one of Derbyshire's finest country houses.
Designed by the noted architect Sir Gilbert Scott to a Jacobean style, Alton Manor was built in 1846 in an attractive mellow ashlar stone.
The house retains many original details and comes to the market for the first time in over 50 years. It is considered suitable as either an exquisite country home or a wide range of potential commercial uses subject to planning consent.
The long tree-lined driveway culminates at the eastern elevation of Alton Manor. This striking elevation has two gables, one either side of a central entrance doorway which has an oriel window above at first floor level. This central bay extends to form a hexagonal turret at second floor level which internally enjoys magnificent views over the driveway approach and grounds. All of the windows throughout the property are mullioned and transomed. The other principal elevation is the southern elevation. The house is designed so that all principal reception rooms and bedrooms enjoy the views from this elevation in a southerly direction over the gardens and large lake which, we understand,is stocked with trout.
The large twin oak entrance doors lead to an entrance vestibule which in turn leads to a stunning hallway. The floor is of local Hopton stone and there is a large fireplace in the same material. The hallway is oak panelled throughout. The wide staircase is elegant and leads to the first floor in three flights. The balustrade has barley twist balusters and oak hand rail. The hallway which is illuminated by a full height stained glass window overlooks the staircase providing a most dramatic entrance to this fine country house.
The drawing room, dining room and library are all situated on the south side of the hallway and each enjoys views over the garden and lake. Intricate detail including the ceiling rose and moulded cornice in the dining room and drawing room are particularly noteworthy.
The rear hall has an original set of servant's bells in-tact and stone steps lead down to substantial cellarage which extends beneath the hall, dining room and library. The kitchen and scullery with original range and butler's pantry are also situated off the rear hall.
A further hallway extends off the main reception hall and has a secondary staircase to the first floor as well as providing access to the study, housekeeper's sitting room and gun room.
The first floor landing is a delightful space having a balustrade to match the staircase and also lit by the full height stained glass window which overlooks the staircase.
The bedroom accommodation is extensive with fourteen rooms over the upper two floors, the first floor having six bedrooms and two bathrooms most of which have fireplaces of Hopton stone. As with the ground floor the house is designed so that the main rooms enjoy southerly views towards the lake, and the principal bedroom enjoys both southerly and easterly views.
Adjoining the main house is an extensive range of two storey outbuildings, a doorway from the rear hall leads to an inner courtyard which has gardeners wc, dog kennel and brew house forming two sides, the main house forming the other two sides. A gate from the small courtyard leads to a larger courtyard which has vehicular access to the front and rear. The L-shaped range of two storey outbuildings which is built of stone to match the house comprises four coach houses, two large stables, tack room and upper floor space which has been used for storage and staff accommodation.
The delightful private parkland setting is a wonderful compliment to this unique property with substantial woodland to the north, and formal grounds to the east and south with a well stocked trout lake towards the southern edge of the estate.
The gatekeepers lodge is situated towards the south eastern boundary of the estate and denotes the start of the driveway to the house. "The Lodge" has two bedrooms, two reception rooms and its own garden.
Adjacent to the driveway on the south east side of the house is the former tennis court which can be identified by the plateau which was created for its purpose. On the north side of the house is a substantial walled garden with yew maze. An ice house which is original to the house is situated towards the northern edge of the estate.
The sale of Alton Manor represents a truly rare opportunity to acquire one of Derbyshire's finest country houses in an estate setting which is equal to the property.
