Newark’s former Wetherspoons to go up for auction
The former Wetherspoons pub in Newark, the Sir John Arderne, which closed in August 2023, is to go up for auction later this month with a guide price of £300,000-£350,000.
The 14,000 sq ft, two-storey Georgian building near the town’s busy Market Place will feature among some 240 other properties and plots of land in the next online live-streamed sale to be held by SDL Property Auctions, on 26th September.
Named after the 14th century doctor and early surgical pioneer John Arderne, who grew up in Newark, the pub was shut down as part of a programme of closures carried out by the Wetherspoons chain last year, with staff offered jobs in other branches.
Auctioneers say the building could now be suitable for a range of different new uses, subject to planning consent, which would be required in order to make changes to the property.
“This is a handsome and historic property, with lots of its original Georgian features still intact, that’s really well located in the heart of the picturesque and well- connected market town of Newark,” said Andrew Parker, auctioneer and partner at SDL Property Auctions.
“We’ve had considerable interest in the building from potential buyers and believe the premises could be split to create separate first-floor residential accommodation, potentially with two or three commercial units on the ground floor.
“After a year in which the former pub was disused, we are really excited to see what the future might hold for the property in the hands of an imaginative new owner,” added Mr Parker.
