Landmark Castle Donington Methodist church goes up for auction

The Methodist church in the centre of the Leicestershire market town of Castle Donington is up for sale by auction this month with a guide price of £150,000.

The landmark grade II listed building is set to be sold in the next live streamed sale to be held by SDL Property Auctions, which is part of Eddisons, on 23 October, along with over 200 other properties and plots of land.

The imposing gothic building was designed in 1905 by Nottingham architect Albert Lambert. A devout Methodist, he designed at least 20 other churches as well as railway stations in Nottingham and Leicester.

The church closed to worshippers in 2022 with the congregation transferring to the nearby Clapgun Street chapel. Located in a conservation area, off Market Street, the building was constructed to seat 715 people and, with its adjoining assembly hall, covers over 8,000 sq ft.

Many of the stone-built property’s original features, including stained glass windows, pews, altar and organ, are all still in place.

Andrew Parker, partner and auctioneer at SDL Property Auctions, said: “This is a wonderful Edwardian building, filled with a treasure trove of original features. Our team are called on to sell buildings that have been places of worship quite regularly and hopefully the outcome of the auction will be a new lease of life for the church in the hands of an imaginative new owner.”

He added: “Castle Donington is a thriving community with great transport links, with the M1 motorway and East Midlands Airport on the doorstep, and there are a variety of potential new uses to which the church building could be put. Obviously anyone intending to change the use of the building will need to make enquiries with the council planning department before placing a bid.”
